Biomedical Writing Program Requirements & Standards
USP has the distinction as the first institution to award the Master of Science in Biomedical Writing, a non-thesis coursework graduate degree. We have graduated approximately 50 professional medical writers since the program began in 1997.
The Biomedical Writing program curriculum is frequently fine-tuned to ensure that students are provided with a broad and relevant core curriculum and innovative elective courses. Students are required to complete 36 credits for graduation, which consists of the entire core curriculum plus 6 elective credits.
Program Design
The schedule of courses meets the needs of working professionals living anywhere in the world with internet and telephone access. USP offers courses each semester-fall, spring, and summer.
You may complete the Master of Science or Certificate of Biomedical Writing part-time or full-time, with all courses available completely online; onsite students are always welcome. Onsite classes (accessed simultaneously live or virtually in a webinar format) are held in the evenings or on weekends. Classes are small and average 6-10 students, which permits individual instruction and attention. You can take up to 12 credits before you'll need to matriculate.
Certificate Programs
USP offers 2 certificate programs. Medical Writing Certificate in Marketing Writing focuses on publications and Medical Writing Certificate in Regulatory Writing focuses on preparing documents for initial and continuing approval of therapies.
These certificates are intended for people with graduate degrees either seeking senior career positions or further training and credentialing in the biomedical writing field. Each certificate program can be completed part-time in 8 months and requires a B average in 4 courses, each 3 credit hours. Certificate courses may be applied toward the Master's of Science degree.
