Meet Thomas H. F. Smith, PhD, graduate of USP's Pharmacology & Toxicology program
Name: Thomas H. F. Smith
Degree Program: MS and PhD in Pharmacology & Toxicology
Year Graduated: MS in 1956 and PhD in 1961
Why I chose USP
USP was the best place to obtain an industry oriented degree with a wide range of courses in the field I was planning to pursue as a career. It had the best reputation of the colleges, with the highest degree of academics. It offered me the opportunity to become educated in diverse fields of science.
How this degree program prepared me for my career
It provided me with a comprehensive and diverse knowledge of scientific fields which could be applied to various industrial applications and positions. It provided in-depth instruction of both basic and applied science in industry.
My career path since graduation
I went from positions in Pharmaceuticals, to Cosmetics and Fragrances, Chemicals, Regulatory, the Computer Industry and Private Testing of drugs. My most important position was Corporate Toxicologist for IBM, for ten years of my career. I was the 2nd President of the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society, on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Toxicology, Chairman of the New York Section of the American Society of Lubrication Engineers, and a Governmental Consultant on Disinfectants. I chaired the Cosmetics and Toiletries Association Cosmetic Toxicology Handbook, used by the Poison Control Centers and served as an Advisor to NASA on toxicology. While at USP, I was elected to be a member of the Corporate Body of the College (PCPS) during my time there.
A memorable USP experience
I cannot single out one particular Professor as being more important than any other, because all of them contributed something distinct to my educational experience. Each of them offered a special and unique 'something' to my education. Two experiences that remains in my memory are being the first 'non-pharmacy major' to be elected as the President of the Student Branch of the APHA, and being Mr. Kramer's assistant for 5 years.
My advice for prospective students
This is the very best school that you can attend to get an education in the Sciences or Pharmacy. You will have to work very hard and apply yourself diligently to your studies. It is a 'fun place to learn' but it is not a 'party school' for the non-serious student. You will graduate fully prepared for the challenges of life, and look back with satisfaction for having gone there.
Other things I want people to know about USP
I couldn't have made a better choice of a school to further my education and career. I left feeling fully prepared for any challenge offered. It was probably the best 7 years of my life, getting my MS and PhD degrees.
