Rani Qasem, PhD Student in Pharmacology & Toxicology
Name: Rani Qasem
Degree Program: PhD in Pharmacology & Toxicology
Graduating: 2010
Employment: I am currently a teaching assistant in the Chemistry Department at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia
Why I chose USP
Because USP has a rich history, strong reputation and strong ties with the industry.
What I like best about my program
I was interested in discussing ongoing research with faculty members. I have a feeling of eager competition on the level of graduate students on one hand, and on the other hand faculty members who present distinguished and interesting research.
Current research interests
I am still doing lab rotations. In one lab I am practicing a technique where I isolate the mitochondria and measure the activity of CPT-1, an enzyme responsible for fatty acid metabolism. Studying this enzyme in different experimental settings could provide clues for treatment of obesity and diabetes.
How this program will help me professionally
The research I'm currently enrolled in during my PhD study enriches my experience and introduces me to a variety of new techniques that enable me to be versatile, conducting research in any area in the future.
